Set high in the hills above the Cleveland Way, this is the sort of stop where the walk is half the point — free parking, a circular route out to Carlton Bank, and a cafe waiting at the end of it. There's masses of seating inside and out, so a pram isn't a problem, and the outdoor tables come into their own on a warm day when everyone needs air. Food arrives fast, which matters with a hungry toddler, and prices are fair for the setting. Cake and coffee are what people come back for, and the staff are warm with it — one family sheltering under a gazebo in hail had hot chocolate brought out to them. Two snags: it's not dog friendly, and the outer toilets aren't always open.
