Tucked into the city centre near the student quarter, this Victorian pub has one genuinely lovely trick — a hanging beer garden built out over the culverted river Medlock, which is a real spot to park a buggy and let children look down at the water while you eat. Inside it's cosy and human-scaled, no thumping music, and the staff are consistently warm and unhurried. Food is straightforward and good value: the trio of chips and the sharing platters go down well with a table of children, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs and a decent soft drinks range. Prices are gentle. Two honest notes — the refurbished seating is hard-backed rather than comfy, the gents' toilets are tired, and there's no parking at all, so come by tram.
