Handily placed opposite the Playhouse, this small independent is a calmer, friendlier option than the chains nearby — worth knowing if you're doing an early tea before a show. The layout helps with children: a bright front room looking onto the street where you can watch Edinburgh go past, and a larger, busier room at the back if your lot are noisy. Service is quick and warm, which matters when someone's hungry. Pizzas come out properly crispy, the fresh pasta is excellent, and the aubergine starter gets particular praise; gluten-free eaters are looked after carefully, with the owners double-checking ingredients themselves. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and buggy access. It's not flawless — the calzone can disappoint and desserts other than tiramisu are skippable — but around £70 for two with drinks feels fair.
