Tucked onto Goodramgate almost opposite the gap where the Minster comes into view, this southern comfort spot looks like a takeaway from the street — just a bar and a couple of tables — but it opens out and sprawls to the rear, with tall tables and lower ones, so there's room to park a pram and settle in. Staff are attentive and unhurried; nobody gets rushed out, which matters when a toddler is halfway through a meal. Portions are big enough to share, and the chicken is the thing — juicy, well-spiced fillet, tenders with creamy mash and gravy people rave about. Biscuits and gravy, the halloumi burger and cinnamon beignets all get a shout, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs and vegan options. It's a little pricey, and small at the front — but one visitor found it "absolutely amazing" two years running.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
