Set in a courtyard of converted stables with a cliff face and woodland rising behind it, this National Trust tea room is an easy stop with children — everything's on the ground floor, so prams roll straight in, and there's inside seating plus covered outdoor tables under big umbrellas when the little ones need air. The staff are consistently warm and unbothered by noise; children, dogs and the occasional wasp are all taken in good humour. Fruit scones come fresh, the parsnip soup is properly good even if it's on the thick side, and there's a decent vegan option or two — the cheese and tomato toastie gets specific praise. Toilets and the gift shop are right there in the courtyard. Worth knowing: the menu is fairly limited and inside seating is tight at busy times. Parking is free.
