Right in the middle of Newcastle, this is a big, characterful pub with unusual decor, comfy chairs and a wide drinks list — and enough space that a buggy isn't a battle, though seats get scarce when it's busy. Portions are enormous (the giant Yorkshire pudding genuinely covers a dinner plate) and there's a proper spread of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options alongside a kids' menu and high chairs. Staff are consistently warm and attentive, and free wifi plus charging points help if you're waiting out a downpour. The outdoor screen shows films at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm daily, which buys you a surprising amount of peace. Not everything lands — Sunday roasts draw grumbles about tired meat and thin gravy — so stick to the home-cooked mains. Dogs welcome too.
