A big old Bristol pub with proper castle looks, this one splits into a family area and an adults' side, though on busy afternoons children roam across both, so don't count on peace. Space is the real advantage — plenty of room to park a pram, high chairs, a kids' menu and free parking outside. The roast at under a tenner is genuinely good value and the mixed grill gets ordered again and again by regulars; food usually lands about 20 minutes after ordering, hot. Two honest caveats: it's often short-staffed, and the room is so large that catching someone's eye can mean walking back to the bar. The building shows its age too — some feel it's overdue a refit. Go for the prices and the history, not the polish.
