Set inside the Bowes Museum, this is a light, roomy café with plenty of space between tables — easy going with a buggy, and free parking outside. Portions are generous and food usually arrives fast, which helps when someone's hungry and losing patience. The cheese scones have a following (crispy outside, soft inside), and people rave about the full English, the Bowes rarebit, the katsu curry and the ginger cake; there's a kids' menu, high chairs, and a window table with a view if you're lucky. Toilets are just by the museum shop rather than in the café. Staff are warm and genuinely chatty with children, though it's popular enough that you may wait for a table, and on a busy day service can slow right down. Sunny days, the outside seating is lovely.
