Cafés · Barnard Castle
A small, elegant café over two floors in Barnard Castle, this one rewards a bit of planning — it's genuinely tight when full, though the team will happily sort a table with room for a pram if you ask (one family arrived needing space for a pram and a wheelchair at short notice and were looked after). Home-made chips and proper butcher's sausages make the children's plates a cut above, there's a kids' menu, high chairs and free parking, and gluten-free and vegan requests are taken in their stride. Adults do well on the full English, jacket potatoes, the goat's cheese and beetroot salad, and the fresh fruit scones and carrot cake. Afternoon tea is the draw but book it. Portions on some breakfast items don't always match the price, so order with that in mind.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
