Albanach
Busy Royal Mile pub with excellent haggis and fish and chips, a kids' menu, high chairs and easier outdoor tables.

American · Edinburgh
Tucked away off the Royal Mile and easy to walk straight past, this is a smoky, generous American barbecue spot that suits a hungry family better than its size might suggest. Portions are big — sharing platters come loaded with fall-off-the-bone ribs, juicy smoked sausage and wings in buffalo, BBQ or honey garlic — so children can graze off the middle without a separate order. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and vegan options, plus a rack of sauces on every table that keeps fussier eaters busy. Ice cream floats are a good bribe. Staff are warm and happy to talk you through the menu. Prices are fair for the tourist end of town, though burgers don't come with fries, and it stays surprisingly calm even when full — one parent found it "won't be chaotic even during busy time".

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
