A short walk from the city centre, this riverside pub splits itself into a bar side and a quieter dining side, which matters when you've got children and don't want a football match blaring over lunch. The dining room is roomy, calm and clean, with buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu, plus outdoor seating overlooking the water and free parking. Food comes out hot and quickly, in generous portions — the fish and chips get real praise, and so do the steak pie, tender duck leg and the bang bang cauliflower. Children tend to go for the fried squid and the triple chocolate brownie. The set lunch at around £13.95 for three courses is good value. Dogs are welcome too, and staff go out of their way; one parent found them "super kind and caring".
