Right on the water in central Cambridge, this multi-floor pub puts you level with the punts going by, and a small outdoor terrace makes the view the entertainment — which buys you a good twenty minutes of children staring at boats instead of at you. There are high chairs, a kids' menu and room to get a pram in, plus colouring to hand and staff happy to make a child (or a pregnant mum) their own special non-alcoholic drink. Food tends to arrive quickly, which matters when someone's unravelling: the Korean fried chicken and Sunday roasts get the loudest praise, along with the steak, scotch eggs and sticky toffee pudding. Dogs are made welcome too. Worth knowing: drinks are Cambridge-priced at around £7 a pint, the upstairs sometimes closes when they're short-staffed, and popular dishes do sell out.
