Tucked down narrow country lanes outside Wigton, this is the sort of place you'd never find unless someone told you about it — which is half the pleasure. It's butcher-owned and cooked by the family, and the food genuinely lives up to the fuss: lamb shank that people still talk about, chicken with pancetta and asparagus, venison with raspberry coulis, potatoes dug that morning. Portions are big enough that children can share, and there's a kids' menu and high chairs if not. The staff are warm and quick with drinks, and one group of eleven was seated without fuss. Free parking and outdoor seating help with restless little ones. Do book — Friday to Sunday evenings fill up, and one visitor called it "a hidden treasure" for good reason.
