Tucked away down the lanes near Wasdale, this one takes a bit of finding — and the parking is roadside, so go carefully with children getting out of the car. Once you're in, there's plenty of room: indoor seating in the café and in the gift shop next door, benches outside, and cosy little huts you can tuck into if the weather turns. Bird feeders by the outdoor tables keep small people occupied while you finish a coffee. The scones are the thing — proper big ones that don't crumble apart, including a caramelised onion and cheese version people go out of their way for — and the all-day breakfast, katsu chicken pie and soups all get generous praise. Prices are reasonable, portions are big, the loos are clean, and the staff are chatty and kind. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are on the menu too.
