Right in the heart of the city, this is one of those places that manages to be a proper night out for grown-ups and still work with children in tow. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access and a few outdoor tables, and the staff have a reputation for going out of their way — one family mentioned a picky ten-year-old being sorted out without fuss. The Scottish breakfast, eggs Benedict with haggis, haggis spring rolls with plum sauce and the steak and ale pie all get raved about, and the sticky toffee pudding is the thing people insist you save room for. Gluten-free and vegan options are handled properly. Two honest caveats: it isn't cheap, and food takes a while to arrive, so it suits older or patient children better. Book ahead for 6–8pm, and ask for a table towards the back where it's quieter.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
