Tucked off the main road near Lyndhurst, this 17th-century thatched pub looks small from the front but opens out across stone floors and low beams into a series of rooms and, at the back, a covered outdoor area and flower-filled garden — the easiest spot with a pram, and where most families end up. Free parking helps, as do high chairs and a kids' menu. Food arrives promptly even on a heaving bank holiday, and the steak and ale pie, whitebait starter and haddock and chips get the most praise, alongside local ales and cider. Staff are warm and look after each other, which shows. It's not faultless — some leave underwhelmed for the price, and vegetarian and vegan choice is thin — but on a cold day the fire-lit wood and beams make it genuinely cosy.
