A proper old corner boozer near Villa Park, unspoilt and full of Victorian character — one room for real ales, a bar, a lounge and a little function room at the back. Prices are low and the food punches well above them: the fish goujons and the plant-based burger both get raved about, and there are chicken goujons for children who'll eat them. Kids' menu, high chairs, outdoor seating and free parking all help, and the staff are genuinely patient and accommodating. Worth knowing before you go: the toilet is outside across a covered yard, which is fine in summer and less fun in January, and it heaves on match days when the football crowd is in. Quiet weekday lunchtimes suit families far better. Regulars call it "a brilliant old boozer" — the sort that hasn't been given a lick of grey paint.
