Sitting somewhere with a proper view over Edinburgh usually means leaving the children at home, but this one does high chairs, a kids' menu and buggy access, so you don't have to. The room is smart rather than stuffy, and the music is kept at a genuinely sensible volume — worth knowing if you've got a child who tips over when it's noisy. Portions are generous enough that nobody leaves hungry: the steak platter to share and the venison both come up again and again, and the Sunday roast has a real following. Staff are attentive with water and drinks and take dietary requests seriously, including gluten-free bread. Two honest notes: the afternoon teatime platter is patchier than the main menu — the scones are lovely, some of the sweet items less so — and it's a special-occasion sort of place, so it's worth booking.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
