Set in a charming green-fronted building with a spacious outdoor area and free parking, this Ambleside spot handles families easily — buggy access, high chairs, a kids' menu, and enough tables that you're not wedged in. There's a separate dining room if you want calm, or the bar side with sport on the TV if your lot are noisy anyway. The fish and chips come in for repeated praise, as does the roast, the beef burger and the gammon board, and there's a big drinks list including local beers. Two honest caveats: it gets exceptionally busy, so book a couple of days ahead for peak times, and when it's full you can wait a while to order and to eat. Arrive before the lunch rush and food lands hot in about ten minutes.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
