Set on the main road with free parking, this is a roomy Greene King pub where a buggy isn't a problem and nobody minds a bit of noise — there's a family area, plus an over-18s section with pool tables if the grandparents want a quieter pint. High chairs are there, a kids' menu runs around £3.99, and the children's burgers come out looking properly made rather than thrown together. Food generally arrives fast even when it's heaving, which it is on Friday nights, at half term and whenever Forest are at home. The Sunday roast gets real praise, the sharing starters — onion rings, nachos — do the job, and the toilets are spotless. Portions can be on the small side and the sizzler dishes don't always arrive hot, so order carefully. Cheap drinks, decent garden front and back.
