A proper village pub in the Vale that manages to be smart without being precious about children — dog and child friendly, with free parking outside, buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu. Tables are spaced well apart, so there's room for a pram without wedging yourself between strangers, and the conservatory dining room at the back is roomy and doesn't overheat. Staff are friendly and quietly attentive, and quick to take allergies seriously. The roast beef gets the loudest praise, along with the cheese pie, the baked Camembert and the Windmill Burger with Stilton; portions are generous and chips come properly crisp. There's an open fire and outdoor seating too. Sundays are busy — book ahead, and be aware service can stretch when it's full. Three courses ran around £33.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
