Gates Garden Centre Stapleton
A roomy Leicester garden centre with a café — an easygoing, mid-priced stop to refuel with the kids after a wander round the plants.

Restaurant · Leicester
Tucked slightly out of the way near Newbold Verdon, this is a proper traditional pub that turns out food well above what you'd expect — the slow-roast beef brisket melts, the pork with its huge, light homemade Yorkshire is a Sunday favourite, and there are curries and pulled pork pancakes with real Asian flavours alongside. There's a log fire, blackboard menus, and staff happy to talk you through them or tweak a dish; a coeliac grandparent and a fussy teen were both sorted on one table. Parking is free and on site, though it fills up on Saturday nights. Food arrives fast even for big groups, and it's laid-back rather than hushed. Sides are charged separately, so bills climb — one family found it pricey but didn't begrudge it.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
