Tucked away in the countryside outside Denbigh, this is a proper cosy country pub — roaring fire, warm decor, small bar — and the food is the reason people drive out. It works on a small-plates, tapas-style menu that changes daily, with everything made in-house from local produce, so dishes arrive as the kitchen sends them out rather than all at once. That suits families well: something lands quickly instead of a long wait. Two to three plates per person is the usual advice, and the staff are good at guiding you through portions without hovering. The homemade pâté, mussels and chocolate mousse come in for particular praise, as do the free crisps while you wait. High chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access and free parking, plus a patio for sunny days. Sunday roast costs a little more than average; the small plates can be hit or miss.
