Tucked into Hawes with free parking outside, this is the kind of Dales pub where the food genuinely lives up to the walk in. The pies get the loudest praise — chicken, leek and bacon, or a mushroom one that vegetarians rate as the pub meal of the trip — alongside braised lamb, beef that falls apart, twice-cooked chips and a crumble worth staying for. Portions are big enough that a child can share yours. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, room to get a buggy in, and a large outdoor area with benches and space for children to be children. Staff are warm and quick even when it's full. Two snags: it's not cheap for the Dales, and dogs are welcome, so a barky one can break the peace. Evenings fill up, so ring ahead.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
