Set in a historic building with a fire you can sit beside, this is a proper special-occasion spot that still manages not to feel stuffy — one visitor turned up in jeans and felt as welcome as anyone dressed up. The cooking is ambitious and genuinely brilliant: monkfish with cauliflower purée, mushroom and potato croquettes with spiced lentils, and puddings that people rave about hardest — a pistachio soufflé described as light as a feather. Sunday roasts get particular praise. The team are patient and accommodating, good with vegan and dietary requests, and they've been known to bring out a birthday card and a brownie. There are high chairs, a kids' menu, outdoor seating and free parking. It gets properly busy at weekends and you can feel it, though food still arrives quickly. Worth booking, and it's not a cheap lunch.
