Right on the Staffordshire–Cheshire border, this is a proper country pub that's been smartened up under new owners — good decor, a warm welcome, and a gentleman-of-the-old-school style of service that families notice. There's free parking outside, so no wrestling a pram down a high street, and buggy access, high chairs, a kids' menu and vegan options are all in place. The gammon is the thing to order: a generous piece with fried egg, pineapple and skin-on wedges, filling enough that pudding rarely happens. Outdoor seating helps on a fine day when little ones need somewhere to wriggle.
