Half an hour's drive out of Aviemore feels like a stretch with children in the back, but this little Grantown restaurant repays it. It's a genuinely wee family place — cosy, puffin-themed decor children enjoy hunting for — and it fills up, so book ahead rather than turning up hopeful. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, and parking is free. Food arrives quickly and comes out fresh: the steak and ale pie draws the loudest praise, alongside big burgers with onion rings and sticky toffee pudding for afters. Separate vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free menus mean nobody's left picking at chips, and the vegan haggis is a proper Scottish shout. Staff are cheerful and unhurried with allergies. Dogs are welcome too. One parent sums it up simply: "not fancy, just fab wholesome food".

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
