Set in the quaint village of Thorpe Thewles, a short drive out of Stockton, this is a proper country pub with a large beer garden that comes into its own on summer evenings, free parking outside, and a warm, cosy interior for the rest of the year. Portions are generous and cooking is done from scratch — the home-made steak pie has a strong following, along with the parmo, the king prawn flatbread, the smash burger with its crispy edges, and a very good smashed avocado and poached eggs at breakfast. Staff are friendly and used to big family tables; one group of ten had Christmas dinner served hot and all at once with no muddled orders. There are high chairs, a kids' menu, vegan options and buggy access. It gets busy, quality can wobble on an off night, and booking is wise at weekends.
