Tucked away near the Barbican, this is a genuinely calm spot in the middle of the city — one of those places where you can hear yourself think while the children eat. Mornings are quietest; arrive around ten and service is quick, food comes out warm, and nobody rushes you. There's a pretty walled garden at the back with dappled shade, plus a cosy upstairs room with plenty of character, though stairs mean the garden or ground floor is easier with a pram. The cream teas are the draw: scones people genuinely rave about, sandwiches, lemon and poppy seed cake, and teapots under knitted cosies that children find funny. Sunday roasts are excellent too, and the vegan afternoon tea is unusually good. There's a kids' menu and high chairs. It gets busy at weekends, so book ahead for afternoon tea.
