Lunch here works without much planning — plenty of families turn up without booking and get seated in the lawned garden, where there's shade under the trees as well as sunnier spots, and it stays surprisingly quiet for a place this busy. Food comes out fast, which matters when someone's patience is running out, and the pizzas get praise for a light, well-cooked crust, alongside generous mushroom arancini and sourdough worth ordering. Inside there's a snug room with a fire for colder days, and a brighter bar and restaurant space. Coffee and cake alone is welcomed just as warmly. Free parking, buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted. It's not cheap, and the odd main can miss — but the freshly baked madeleines rarely do.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
