A proper old-school pub in Stoke-on-Trent that families keep coming back to — clean, bright and roomy enough for a party of eight without anyone feeling squeezed. Parking is spacious and right out front (there are steps into the front door, worth knowing with a pram), and the kitchen sends food out fast and piping hot, which matters when a toddler has hit the wall. Almost everything is homemade, chips included, and the puddings get the loudest praise — chocolate orange sponge, coffee and walnut cake. Fish and chips and hunter's chicken are safe bets; portions are generous and prices genuinely gentle. Staff are cheerful and welcoming, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs and outdoor seating. Sunday lunch is the weak spot — several families have found it a step below the weekday cooking.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
