A proper old city-centre boozer near New Street, this one is a genuinely handsome place to break up a Birmingham day out — Victorian tiling, classic dark wood, and panels on the walls telling the story of the pub and the area, which buys you a few minutes of children peering at something. It's small, so a buggy is easier outside peak drinking hours, though there's step-free access, high chairs and a kids' menu when you do get in. The staff draw constant praise for being patient and unhurried, and service is quick even when it's moderately busy. Food is simple and fairly priced — a sandwich, chips and a drink came to around £15 — while the cask ales are the real draw and the pints are London-money dear. Quiet on a weekday afternoon; livelier evenings.
