Set in an old country pub with proper period features — beams, character, a cosy feel that somehow still leaves room for a pram — this is the sort of place families drive out to on purpose. The famous cow pie is what most people come for, sold in half or quarter portions with lashings of gravy, seasonal veg and chips or mash; the brie wedges, game pie, roast beef and sticky toffee pudding all get the same praise, and portions are generous without being fussy. Prices are fair for the quality, there's a kids' menu, high chairs, outdoor seating and free parking, though the car park fills up and you may wait for a space. It's tucked out of the way and busy, so book — one family got a table for eight last minute, but that's luck rather than the rule. Dogs are welcome too.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
