Sunday lunch is the reason most families end up here — giant fluffy Yorkshire puddings, sharing bowls of veg for the table, and roast potatoes that arrive in portions nobody finishes. Prices are genuinely low for the quality; the food is homemade and the pie and the paté get mentioned again and again, as do the chips. It's a proper countryside pub, spotlessly clean and cosy inside, with outdoor seating, high chairs and a kids' menu, and gluten-free and plant-based cooking that goes well beyond a token dish. Staff are patient with small children — one parent's fussy five-year-old was handled "with kindness and care". Two snags worth knowing: the car park is small and awkward at busy times despite being free, and it's popular enough that you'll want to book, which can only be done by phone.
