Set inside Summerhall's old veterinary school, this is a rambling, high-ceilinged place made up of lots of small rooms with mismatched furniture, flags and tribal masks on the walls — plenty of space to park a pram and let children have a wee wander at the surrounding architecture. It's roomy enough that a noisy toddler won't feel like the main event, and the team behind the bar are consistently warm and chatty. The Sunday roast is the thing to come for: tender beef, generous portions, mountains of roast potatoes, lots of gravy, and good veggie options too. Burgers, BLTs and calamari sandwiches also land well, though the fried calamari can be overdone. High chairs, a kids' menu and outdoor seating help. Busy evenings fill with booked tables, so reserve — and during the festival it's packed and drinks come in plastic.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
