A proper old-fashioned local, and one that surprises people who've walked past it for years without noticing. It's small, so a pram will need parking sensibly rather than parked beside you, but the welcome makes up for it — the landlady and the team behind the bar are genuinely cheerful with everyone who comes through, children included, and there are high chairs, a kids' menu and outdoor seating when it gets busy inside. Prices are kind. Food is by prior arrangement rather than all-day service, so ring ahead: the roast dinner is what regulars talk about most. Worth knowing it has lively evenings — live music some nights, open mic on alternate Wednesdays, a jukebox and a snooker table — so lunchtimes and early afternoons suit little ones far better than a Friday night.
