Pub · Plymouth
Tucked down the back streets on North Hill, this is the sort of small, old-fashioned pub that feels like drinking in someone's front room — cosy, unspoilt, with easy background music rather than a wall of noise. It's a genuinely warm welcome; the landlady and staff make a fuss of newcomers, and there are high chairs and a kids' menu, so children aren't an afterthought. The draw for grown-ups is the beer: usually three locally brewed handpulled ales on, plus good cider and plenty of non-alcoholic choices. The food gets real praise too, including a vegan beef wellington people go back for. Two honest snags: there's no parking, so plan how you'll arrive, and it's a genuinely little place, so a pram will be a squeeze. Live music nights are lovely but livelier.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.

Cosy Chinese where the duck and the welcome shine, though service can drag — sit in rather than ordering takeaway.
