There's a lot of history in this building — one of England's oldest inns, apparently — and it's the kind of place where old beams and quirky low ceilings meet properly clean toilets and a team that keeps an eye on you without hovering. Roomy enough that families slot in even when it's busy, with high chairs, a kids' menu and free parking to save the usual faff. The outdoor seating comes into its own on a warm day, and there's genuine kitchen skill here: the duck and pork belly get raved about, the fish and chips arrive with light, crisp batter, and the sticky toffee pudding is worth the extra fifteen minutes. Coeliac diners are well looked after. It's a proper sit-down dinner rather than a quick refuel, so book ahead at weekends.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
