A proper village pub where booking is genuinely essential — it fills up, and the car park that's half empty at opening is jammed by seven. Worth the faff, though. Portions are enormous, to the point that families routinely take a box home, and the homemade chips get singled out again and again as the reason to come back. Sunday lunch arrives with bowls of veg and someone circling with extra meat and roasties. There's a fire in winter, high chairs, a kids' menu and space to get a buggy in, plus outdoor seating and free parking. Staff are attentive without hovering, happy to set up birthday balloons if you ring ahead, and accommodating with gluten-free. It's not the cheapest round here, but one visitor calls the quality "more than worth it".
