Sunday carvery is the main event here, and it's the sort parents plan a week around — beef served properly pink with something like nine vegetables, crispy potatoes, and a portion of brisket in gravy thrown in with the large. Book ahead, genuinely; tables go, especially at weekends. The beer garden is the reason to bring children: there's a proper play area out there, so you can finish a drink while they run about, and the car park is huge and free, with buggy access indoors and high chairs available. Portions defeat most people — the ham, egg and chips arrives with two eggs, salad, coleslaw and a mountain of chips — and 2-for-£25 mains keep a family lunch reasonable. Staff are warm and quick to accommodate, even with a muddled booking. Card tips aren't accepted, so bring a little cash.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
