A short drive out of Polegate — or a 15-minute walk over the footbridge through fields if you fancy the adventure — this 16th-century pub sits in a valley with a big garden terrace and its own tiki bar. That garden is the family-friendly bit: room to spread out, an outside bar so you don't have to squeeze a pram indoors, plus high chairs, a kids' menu and free parking. Staff are genuinely good with little ones — one family had plain veg steamed for their baby without any fuss — and food comes out hot and fast. The cooking is a step above pub grub: home-made chips, fish pie, lamb pie, sausage and mash and a sticky toffee pudding people rave about. Portions are generous. Tables fill up, especially sunny weekends, so arrive early or expect to perch at the bar.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
