About The Place to Eat

Perched on the top floor of John Lewis in the St James Quarter, this is a genuinely useful pit stop mid-shop — spacious, quiet, with plenty of tables and toilets right there, so there's room to park a buggy without apologising to anyone. The views over the city and down to the water are the real draw; get there for opening at 9am if you want a window seat. Kids' menu and high chairs are sorted. The vegetarian full breakfast, the scones and the big slices of cake (rhubarb and custard especially) earn their keep, and it's worth ordering coffee from the barista rather than the self-service machines. Honest snags: it's pricier than it looks for a small roll, food runs out by early afternoon, and on busy weekends tables can sit uncleared. One parent found it "quiet and spacious for families" all the same.
