Housed in the old DRI building on London Road, this is a proper special-occasion place that still works with children in tow — buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu, plus gardens at the back and a glass-fronted extension that makes the room feel light rather than cramped. The cooking is ambitious: smoked duck and liver parfait with rhubarb, roasted stone bass with a smoked eel croquette, wild garlic panna cotta. Set lunch menus (two or three courses) bring the cost down considerably, which matters, because à la carte is a treat-yourself price and portions on the mains can run small. Staff are attentive and full of little touches — water and butter waiting on the table, a card for an anniversary. One diner describes the service as "swish". Book if you want a weekend table, and expect a dressed-up crowd.
