About The Open Arms

Children tend to fall for the way in before anything else — you step through a gap in a wall into the beer garden, which one family's six-year-old calls the "secret pub". That garden is the real draw: vines overhead, grapes ripening by September, room to park a buggy and plenty of outdoor seating on a warm day. Inside there are three cosy rooms, all showing sport, so weekends get lively rather than restful. Service is quick and friendly, high chairs and a kids' menu are there, and portions run generous — the Sunday roasts get the loudest praise, though the beef can be overdone, so the pork belly is the safer order. Chilli cheese chips, jalapeño bites and a margherita pizza cover smaller appetites. It's up a hill, but less of a climb than it looks. Monday is quiz night and busy.
