Handy if you're heading down the A30 with a car full of hungry children — there's free parking on the road outside and enough space to get a buggy in. Inside is a proper country pub: low, cosy, with a fire that makes winter lunches feel like a treat, plus a rear beer garden for warmer days and outdoor seating when the little ones need to move. High chairs and a kids' menu are sorted, and the staff are consistently warm — several families turned up without booking and were still found a table. The fish and chips and the Sunday roast get the most praise, and gluten-free eaters are unusually well looked after, with a separate fryer and most dishes adaptable. Food generally arrives quickly. One caveat: it's not cheap for a regular midweek supper, and portions can be hit and miss.
