Pub · Manchester
A traditional Joseph Holt boozer a short walk from Piccadilly Gardens, this is the sort of old Manchester pub where the staff remember what you ordered the other day. Food is ordered at the bar and it's genuinely cheap — hearty pub plates, sometimes with a pint thrown in — and there's a kids' menu and high chairs, so an early lunch works nicely before the evening crowd builds. Be warned: it's a small place that fills fast, particularly on football days, and the kitchen doesn't run every session, so it's worth ringing ahead if you're counting on feeding everyone. Toilets are downstairs and could do with a freshen-up. The little function room upstairs is clean and well kept, and the team handle parties there smoothly. Regulars call it "warm, welcoming, wonderful".
