A three-mile country walk is worth it for the cream teas alone — scones still warm, huge servings of jam and cream, and cake slices (the lemon and raspberry gets singled out) big enough that most people can't finish them. It's small inside, so the outdoor tables are the roomier option with a pram; when the weather turns, the staff come out with blankets. There are high chairs, a kids' menu and vegan choices — a vegan jacket potato with cheese and beans does the job — plus easy free parking right there. Service is quick and genuinely attentive, and afternoon tea is so generous they hand out tupperware for the leftovers. It gets busy even on a Tuesday lunchtime, so reserve a table. Prices are fair, though a soya coffee at £4.40 stings.
