Perched at the bottom of the hills just outside Alston, this farm shop café sits at the end of the Hartside pass — which means a big, level car park with room to swing a pram out of the boot, and views over farmland while you wait. Inside gets genuinely busy at lunchtime, but the food still arrives fast and piping hot, and the staff stay warm and efficient with it. The breakfast sandwiches and bacon butties are what most people come back for, alongside sausage rolls, soup, toasties and a gluten-free chocolate cake that's better than it needs to be. Toilets are separate and, as one visitor put it, "absolutely immaculate" — a small mercy mid-nappy-change. High chairs, a kids' menu, vegan and vegetarian options, outdoor seating and dogs welcome. Worth a wander up to the Roman fort afterwards.
