Just off the A38 and easy to land in with a car full of hungry children — parking is free and there's buggy access — this pub restaurant turns out to be far roomier than it looks. Seating is spread across several areas, so even at capacity each corner feels cosy rather than cramped, and there's outdoor seating when the noise gets to you. High chairs and a kids' menu are on hand, and the staff are attentive without hovering, topping up drinks and checking orders came out right. The food does the heavy lifting: home-made turkey pie, decent fish and chips, pork belly that people talk about afterwards, and a sticky toffee pudding one visitor called "divine". Dietary needs are clearly labelled and well catered for, vegan options included. Two-course set menus keep it good value; there's a quiz night too, so weekend evenings can get lively.
