A proper village pub on the edge of Appleby, and one that families settle into easily — buggy access, free parking outside, high chairs and a kids' menu, plus a huge garden that comes into its own on summer evenings. The food is the reason people come back: the steak pie gets mentioned again and again, along with generous portions (one visitor described "the biggest slab of pie" they'd seen), Sunday sirloin with two roasties, four veg and a Yorkshire, pork bites and ribs, and even Singapore noodles. The team is a family one and it shows — chatty, patient, quick to make you feel at home. Worth knowing it's genuinely popular with locals, so evenings get lively and there aren't many spare tables; book ahead. Dogs are welcome too.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
